How to Use the Background Remover
- Click the upload box, or drag and drop a photo onto it.
- Click the Remove Background button - a progress bar shows while the AI model downloads and processes your photo (a few seconds on first use).
- Once done, the result appears next to your original - the checkered pattern shows the transparent areas.
- Click Download PNG to save your image with a transparent background.
How It Works
This tool uses Google's MediaPipe Selfie Segmentation model, which runs directly inside your browser using WebAssembly - not a paid cloud API. The model identifies the person or main subject in your photo and separates it from the background pixel by pixel, producing a transparent PNG. Because everything happens locally, your photo is never sent anywhere.

What photos work best? This tool is optimized for photos of people - portraits, selfies, and full-body shots against a reasonably distinct background give the cleanest results.
Why does it say the model failed to load? The AI model file needs a stable internet connection to download the first time you use it in a browser session - on slow or unstable mobile data, this can time out. Switch to WiFi or a stronger connection and click Remove Background again to retry.
Can I use the result commercially? Yes - the output is your own processed image; PocketKit does not add watermarks or claim ownership.
